Eyes of Watson
How might we utilize machine vision, reasoning, and learning to help radiologists with medical inferences?
Background
As an unprecedented honor, IBM Almaden Research Center was invited by RSNA (Radiological Society of North America) to be a featured learning experience at their annual meeting for IBM Fellow and Chief Scientist Dr. Tanveer Syeda-Mahmood to introduce a new paradigm of cognitive imaging analysis to industry experts.
Dr. Tanveer Syeda-Mahmood invited me to help design the experience for the event.
the team
The Eye of Watson work was implemented by the IBM Almaden Research team with myself and a front-end developer from my group:
A design lead (myself )
1 data visualization researcher
1 database engineer
1 backend developer
1 front end developer
supported by the research teams and RSNA staff
our Approach
We took an illustrative approach to user experience, displaying a build of Watson’s inference process, piece by piece, ending with a comprehensive analysis for review.
PROCESS
Much of the design team’s process involved understanding of the medical corpus, and converting Watson’s methods of analysis into an experience that radiologists could relate to and, hopefully, trust.
Outcome
Over 5,000 radiologists visited the Watson center, surpassing the projection by 200%. We also obtained over 75% of neutral to positive feedback from the in-app survey.
